ENDOCRINOLOGY AND STATURE (HEIGHT)
Short stature is a condition often seen, but not adequately treated because of failure to appreciate the consequences on the child. Several hormones like growth hormone, thyroid hormone, cortisol, parathyroid hormone, vitamin D and its metabolite are complexly regulating our height, and this is, in turn modulated by what genes we inherit from our folks and our skeletal architecture.
This in turn is dependent on local hormones. We can now detect very early in course the chances of adult short stature in comparison to what height ought to have been, given the genes from our parents and our nutritional status and hormonal status.
Many of these can be associated with other organ disturbances and all these can be tackled before irreversible damage as early gastrointestinal, renal, hormonal, drug induced disorders, etc can present only as failure of height gain and detecting these, is rewarding to the patient.
